Oman’s Haya Water awarded a RO 26.7 million (US$ 69.6 million) contract on 21 May 2012 to Contractors Union Co to construct the second phase of a water-reuse project in Al Qurum and Madinat Al Ilam areas in Muscat Governorate.
The contract is for design and construction of wastewater networks and water treatment in Al Qurum and Madinat Al Ilam areas, as part of ongoing work to construct the water-reuse project in the Walayat of Bausher.
Included in the 30-month contract are the extension of 40 km of wastewater pipes and 66 km of laterals, as well as the establishment of 13 pumping stations and 885 drainage holes and 5,600 inspection and control-rooms. The project also includes the establishment of ten main channels to use the treated water for irrigation purposes.
The contract also stipulates the extension of optical fibre cables and linking around 5,000 private and public units to the wastewater system. Contractors Union will conduct an intensive survey of houses connected to the wastewater system which will mark a major shift away from existing sewerage systems and disposal by wastewater tankers.
Hussein bin Hassan Abdul Hussein, CEO of Haya Water, said the Al Qurum & Madinat Al Ilam project is part of the Bausher project, which is one of the important contracts in the water-reuse system and expected to serve over 20,000 people when completed.
The Oman newspaper, Muscat Daily, reported Adbul Hussein as saying at the contract signing that Haya Water will award four projects worth nearly RO150mn by the end of this year for the development of wastewater systems in Amerat.
