Ministry reported to have rejected Chile desalination EIS

The Ministerio del Medio Ambiente (Environment Ministry) in Chile has apparently rejected the environmental impact study (EIS) produced by Suez subsidiary Agbar Chile for an 86,000 m³/d desalination plant in Northern Region III.

A report in BNAmericas on 31 August 2011 quotes a ministry source as saying the EIS had not properly addressed the impact on landscape and tourism as a result of the plant’s location.

The reverse-osmosis plant was to have been the first joint-venture desalination project in Chile, with Agbar (Aguas de Barcelona) providing the expertise and mining companies sharing the cost.
