The International Desalination Association (IDA) has awarded its Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship for 2011 to Errol M Glenn of the USA and Sim Siang Tze Victor of Singapore.
IDA awards these scholarship grants of up to US$ 10,000 per calendar year to one or more graduate students studying engineering or science in preparation for a career in desalination or water technologies.
Glenn is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental Engineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. He joined the Applied Environmental Microbiology Laboratory in the summer of 2010, where his research focus has been on advanced electrohydrodynamics with applications to biofouling remediation technologies for seawater desalination SWRO membrane processes.
Glenn is the Henry Samueli School of Engineering’s 2010 Recipient of the Newkirk Center for Science and Society Fellowship. His research is currently being supported by Tera Analysis Ltd. (Svendborg, Denmark), the developers of QuickField electromagnetics simulation software. His work has been published by the International Society for Optical Engineering, among others.
Sim, who also received the Channabasappa Scholarship Award in 2010, is a PhD candidate at the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, under the supervision of Professor Anthony Fane. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with First Class Honours in Applied Chemistry in 2008 and has achieved various academic awards, including a prestigious scholarship from Ngee Ann Kongsi (Singapore) for his academic achievements.
In late 2009, Sim became a researcher in the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC), where he helped to develop an improved design for a novel sensor for water treatment. He has since been invited to be a co-inventor on the technology disclosure and patent for the sensor and will hold a consultancy position as a Development Engineer in Membrane Instruments and Technology Pte Ltd to assist in its commercialization.
Sim was awarded the NRF (EWT) PhD Scholarship (Local) from the Environment & Water Industry Programme Office and received his award from the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources during SIWW in 2010.
