Funding totalling US$ 900 million for the Shuweihat 2 power and water project in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has been secured by GDF Suez, the company announced on 6 January 2009.
The French energy giant has a 40% stage in the project along with the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority.
Shuweihat 2 is a greenfield, natural gas-fired installation that will deliver 1,500 MW of electricity and 454,610 m³/d of water. The desalination portion will be built by Doosan Heavy Industries Co under a contract awarded in July 2008.
The US$ 795.7 million plant is to be completed by August 2011 and will supply drinking water to more than 1.5 million people.
