Energy Recovery supplies Mirfa project

US fluid pressure recycling specialist, Energy Recovery, is to provide its PX Pressure Exchanger technology to the giant Mirfa desalination project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mirfa is the fourth large desalination plant in the UAE to implement the PX energy-saving technology including the 136 Ml/d Fujairah 1 Expansion, and the 13th internationally said Energy Recovery.

“As water and energy demand increase around the globe, more countries are looking to our pressure exchange technology to provide cost effective and energy efficient solutions,” said Energy Recovery chief executive officer, Tom Rooney.

“As the fourth mega desalination plant in the UAE and the 13th overall, the PX Q300 implementation at Mirfa further validates the technology’s strong performance, track record and OEM preference,” Rooney added.

Energy Recovery claimed that each year in the UAE alone, its technology helps produce desalinated water at almost 406 Ml/d and saves some 470 GWh of energy and reduces costs by more than US$ 47 million. “This is equivalent to taking about 70,000 vehicles off of the road permanently,” the company claims.

Meanwhile Power demand in Abu Dhabi is growing at a rate of more than 10% a year, while water consumption is, according to Energy Recovery, projected to rise from 4,400 Ml/d at present to more than 5,500 Ml/d by 2021 as a result of new industrial developments and a fast-growing population.
