The WateReuse Association has announced the program for its annual symposium, including a closing panel discussion entitled Direct Potable Reuse: Not a Pipe Dream Anymore?
The Water Environment Federation and the American Water Works Association are cosponsors of the 26th Annual WateReuse Symposium at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Phoenix, Arizona, on 11-14 September 2011. The program covers various aspects of water reuse and desalination, including treatment technologies, the energy-water nexus, planning, operations, economics, water quality, health effects, education, potable reuse, sustainability and case studies.
The keynote address will be delivered by Robert Glennon, author of Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What To Do About It, which was published in 2009 by Island Press. His previous books include the highly-acclaimed Water Follies: Groundwater Pumping and the Fate of America’s Fresh Waters (2002). Glennon is the Morris K Udall Professor of Law and Public Policy in the Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona.
Although indirect potable reuse has been shown to be a necessary, effective, and acceptable means of increasing water supplies in many water-short areas of the world, direct potable reuse remains more controversial. The distinguished panelists for the closing discussion on the topic will be Gary Bickford of ACTEW Corporation, Ellen McDonald of Alan Plummer Associates, George Tchobanoglous of the University of California-Davis, and Rhodes Trussell of Trussell Technologies.
