Deshmukh to oversee West Basin desalination and recycling

West Basin Municipal Water District in Los Angeles County, California, has hired former Orange County engineer Shivaji Deshmukh to be its new assistant general manager.

Deshmukh will oversee recycling operations and engineering, including the doubling of West Basin’s water recycling production, expansion of its ocean-water desalination program and maintaining its commitment to sound financial management practices.

“West Basin has set ambitious water reliability goals for the next ten years and the breadth and depth of Shivaji’s talents will help us be successful,” said general manager Rich Nagel. “Shivaji’s comprehensive experience in water recycling, engineering, operations, public information and budget and finance make him a perfect fit for the West Basin team as we expand water recycling and conservation programs and further our ocean-water desalination efforts,” he said.

At Orange County Water District, Deshmukh managed the implementation of its Groundwater Replenishment System. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, and has been active in both WateReuse and the American Waterworks Association.

Deshmukh replaces Paul Shoenberger, who became general manager of Mesa Consolidated Water District in Costa Mesa in September 2009.
