Biwater wins Pt Hueneme desalination contract

Biwater AEWT Inc announced on 30 September 2009 that it had been awarded a contract to design and supply a membrane desalination system for the City of Port Hueneme in California, USA. The new system will deliver a total of 1 MGD (3,785 m³/d) of high-quality drinking-water when completed.

The membranes will replace an existing electrodialysis-reversal system, which has proved to be too costly to maintain and operate.

The new energy-efficient desalination system will incorporate two separate energy-recovery systems. One will transfer hydraulic energy from the second-stage concentrate to the second-stage feed. The other will transfer the hydraulic energy from an existing raw-water bypass line to produce electrical energy for the plant.

This fast-track project is due to be completed within 130 days. When completed, the entire facility will be producing 4 MGD (15,140 m³/d) of potable mineralized water in accordance with strict US standards at significantly reduced energy consumption.
