A 10 MIGD (45,460 m³/d) seawater desalination plant is to be built in Barka, Oman, for Oman Power & Water Procurement Co by ACWA Power International.
Announcing the award of the build-own-operate contract to its subsidiary AWCA Power Barka SAOG on 17 July 2012, the company said the project would be constructed adjacent to ACWA Power‘s existing plant and would benefit from its synergies.
A new water purchase agreement will be executed for the expansion project, which will end with the existing power and water purchase agreement. The expansion project will be funded by a syndicated loan from local and regional financial institutions.
Construction of the expansion project will commence before end of the third quarter of 2012, and ACWA is targeting completion and the start of water production for the last quarter of 2013.
